Like many of us, I suffer from an affliction that gives me an irrational dislike of boring yet practical vehicles. I do, in fact, flock to beaters. Only requirements (that I will totally disregard on a whim) for this purchase are:
it must get me the 8 miles from point A to point B in the Michigan winter
must not have a goddamn 4L60E
could possibly tow the bike
all under $3000.
But all these are apparently no good :( why can’t I just accept a boring-ass V6 manual work truck and be done with it?

Because you could have a Saab wagon.
![]() 09/11/2016 at 09:18 |

Wouldn’t that Suburban have a 700R4, which is basically a 4L60 without the electronics that were not the problem?

That ‘burban will have a non-e version of your undesirable trans.

Yes.

Buy international, sell for $5,000 more in 5 years.

I’m aware. The desire for garbage is real.

Yup, that’s why this is also on the menu:

That Ranger is pretty groovy. My first car was a little old Ranger, but nowhere near as cool as that one.

That thing rules. Too bad it’s not a ‘96 though, I think that was the first year of the Mark VI with a roller cam.

here’s the only one searching all of Metro Detroit and surrounding areas:

Just a new engine you say? You put 3 grand into it you say? There should have been an engine in there somewhere!
![]() 09/11/2016 at 09:39 |

So wait why isn’t that ranger in your driveway already?
![]() 09/11/2016 at 09:42 |

because the Blazer is still taking up space
![]() 09/11/2016 at 09:42 |

I would suggest Buick Roadmaster Wagon with the towing package but that has a 4L60, so Ford LTD County Squire if you can find one.
![]() 09/11/2016 at 09:45 |

Buy that damn international.

these were also shot down:

That would have a 4L80E, so that should be fine.
![]() 09/11/2016 at 09:52 |

I like that Ranger!
![]() 09/11/2016 at 09:56 |

It’s listed as manual, so even better.
Also this seems way too good to be true, but I’d be more than happy to switch back to Ferd: http://detroit.craigslist.org/mcb/cto/577515…
![]() 09/11/2016 at 09:57 |

I sent an email! They didn’t mention the mileage, so it’s probably outside of Travis’s acceptable window.
![]() 09/11/2016 at 09:59 |

Listed as a manual trans, so NV4500 with a 12" clutch if it’s not a typo.
![]() 09/11/2016 at 10:09 |

Definitely a scam.

A byproduct of the simplicity of those cars is bulletproof reliability. Unless it’s got over 300k, you’re good.

I knowwwwww but
![]() 09/11/2016 at 10:25 |

he shot all of those down?
sorry travis, you drinks are getting spiked now
![]() 09/11/2016 at 10:29 |

You really are a glutton for punishment. I like your style, and I like all of these, but none of them are suitable winter daily drivers.

4AOD, no problems there!

That would make it an uber-unicorn!
![]() 09/11/2016 at 10:32 |

noooo do not spike his drinks, he is just being the voice of reason, and I’ll probably have to dip into our joint account so he does get a say. Also I think I may give him a heart attack if I keep sending him shitty CL links.
![]() 09/11/2016 at 10:34 |

Hold your nose? GMT-800's are fantastic trucks, and the pre-facelifts like this are damn good looking (I abhor the angry eyes Silverados). That’s a NP too!
![]() 09/11/2016 at 10:36 |
|
I LOVE THE ANGAR EYES THEY ARE SO TACKY
But yes, it would be a very solid truck. Just not as obnoxious/sketchy as I’m accustomed to.
![]() 09/11/2016 at 10:37 |

I never said spike with something lethal....Just knock him out of commision for a few days and buy w/e you want.

You could always make it obnoxious and sketchy yourself. Pre-runner anybody?

yessss so many good. Too many miles on the Cheyenne for Trav’s taste though.

If it were real, it should already be in your driveway, room or not. Because that is a safe flip.

the 87 suburban probably has a 700R4 the non electronic version of the 4l60e. My dad’s 87 v10 (no it’s just a v8) silverado had the transmission built 3 times throughout its 275,000 miles its done. Yes I still have but its in primer.
What about jeep ZJs?
![]() 09/11/2016 at 12:05 |

It’s rear drive, right? When the bed’s empty a rear drive pickup is decently sketchy in winter. (Might be speaking from experience)
![]() 09/11/2016 at 12:06 |

Puts $3000 in the car.
Can’t be bothered to put air in the tire
![]() 09/11/2016 at 12:09 |

No way will the owner of that ‘02 Super Duty sell for less than $3,000
![]() 09/11/2016 at 12:16 |

Came to say this. As weak a link as the 4L60e is, it was upgraded a couple times over the years, fixing some of the biggest issues. The electronics aren’t the issue, so the older you go the worse it gets.
![]() 09/11/2016 at 12:32 |

And the 4.3 is amazingly torquey down low. Even in rain it can get sideways....
![]() 09/11/2016 at 12:33 |

I had a Ranger just like that. Painted Napa auto parts blue. It was solid and easy to work on. I say go with that. Plus it sort of matches the bike!

A few years back I drove a 2WD F-350 Dually through Michigan at night in a blizzard. There was no speed or throttle position at which the rear wouldn’t randomly break traction on unseen ice. Never have I felt more awake.

That was just the first page too...

+1 to the Super Duty, ‘88 F-150, and the Ford box truck! Avoid the Durango, 2nd-gens are time bombs, ditto its Aspen twin.
![]() 09/11/2016 at 14:12 |

That Ranger looks like fun! I’d buy it if my wife didn’t have a restriction to anything no more than 15 years old (and I lived nearby)

A few weeks ago I about lost it in my work Cummins. Pulled out of the parking lot, boost hit, got completely parallel.

We towed my husband’s CB 450 with a RAV4 so I don’t think that part will be too hard.
(And he took the Grom home from the dealership stuffed IN the RAV4...)

just saying, a sawzall and some plastidip would fix that
